Grillin'

Today was intended to be a chill day, but we spent the afternoon scrapbooking the trip into a mini scrapbook in a tin for my mom. My dad finished fixing things up around my apartment for me, and we did a little shopping. I spent $100 in gift cards at Crate & Barrel, half of it on a cast iron grill pan for the stove, since I can't have a fire/propane grill here (based on the new CA fire code). We bought some beef and chicken at Safeway and used up some of my CSA veggies by cooking some tasty tasty kabobs and saffron rice for dinner, and drank a bottle of Merlot. For dessert, we made grilled peaches.

Where in the CA fire code does it say you can't have a propane grill?

My lease says I couldn't have a -charcoal- grill, but says nothing about propane, and I've never seen anything in the fire code about it.

Really? I read the new fire code that someone sent around the office... it pretty much stated that any grill with a flame on a patio under x size with flammable/wooden walls is giant violation.

Aaaand since my apartment complex has *no* firewalls between the apartments in the attic, it would suck a lot to burn the place down.

oh also, the person who sent around the fire code was actually trying to sell his grill to someone outside Santa Clara Cty or with a house, since he also interpreted it to mean he couldnt have a grill at his place.

Wow, that is rough not having a grill. I grill all year long, even when there is a foot of snow (I am not kidding).

What really surprises me is the "no grills" but you can live in a house with no fire breaks in attics. Once a fire goes up the wall, it'll hit that roof and just run.

Agrred, Ed. My best guess is that my apartment was built before the firewall regulation went into effect, and they somehow got through a loophole when they renovated it a few years ago.

The unfortunate part, is that when I grill on my spiffy new cast iron grill pan, it makes so much smoke that even with the windows open, the smoke detector goes off like mad. I'm sure my neighbors love me.
